One of God’s great natural wonders

I’m long back from AZ, but wanted to finish out the details of my trip before I forget them all. As I mentioned, Joy and I rented a car and took off with her mom (her parents were RVing in the south and met up with is in Phoenix while we were there) north toward the Grand Canyon. On Monday, we moved on from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. Because we had a senior in the car, we were able to get her a lifetime pass to national parks for $10, and we got in free on that! I’ve seen a lot of pictures of the place before, but truely nothing like the real thing in living third dimension. I think everyone should see it for themselves. Our travels from Flagstaff to GC took us up and down a lot of elevation changes, climates, eco-systems, etc. It was really neat. We took the hermit’s trail up the west end of the south rim of the canyon.

One of the wildest things about the place is that they didn’t have the whole thing blocked off like it would have been in Minnesota. Sure, they had signs to tell you about places where it was particularly dangerous to tread, go rock hopping and such, but no guard rails and big signs saying “keep out”, “go away” or the like. If someone wants to do something stupid, they just go right ahead and do it. The locals here in MN wil attest (if they’ve noticed, that is) that we live in the land where those in authority think that the general public is stupid, and should be protected from themselves. Interesting contrast in my mind. It gives a guy a lot to think about.
