Oh deer god!

I’m behind a few days in posting. Thursday was a busy day. Mike from Rochester came in the afternoon to ride with Joy and I to house group in Willmar. I’ll tell you a bit about Mike and our time at the meeting, then comes the wild part!Mike is a teacher at heart, and really loves to get people thinking about what the Bible really says and how it applies to our lives. He’s a fun guy to be around, I like having the opportunity to minister with him.

We got to Willmar, had some dinner at the Mexican place in town (yum), and went to Phil’s house where the group meets. We were the first ones there, everyone else came late (except Phil, of course). We did one song of worship (that’s all it took), God’s presence was there, and we did some quick announcements and let Mike start.

He’s been working on his delivery, and it shows. He paced very well, was clear and concise in teaching. The teaching ended and we prayed for people in the group as they had needs. Then we had some cake to celebrate the birthdays of a couple ladies in the group.

Joy didn’t work the next day, so she had the idea to go to Perkins. We went with Carmen, Mel, and Mike. We had a really good time talking. We hung around until midnight so Carmen could get her birthday pancakes. I was getting tired, not looking forward to the drive home.

We take backroads home because it’s less miles, there’s less traffic, I know the roads well, and I hate going through all the towns on Hwy 23. I turned on some tunes and headed off. Mike was tired, he had been running since 6a or so, Joy sleeps on the way home, and as usual, once I got on the road, I woke up a bit.

About 35 mins from home, we came down a familiar hill about 150 yards from a stop sign. I saw something in the ditch on the right side, so I started to slow and veer to the other side of the road, which was empty. The “something” I saw was a deer, which came up to the shoulder of the road, trying to decide what to do next. By this time I had slowed to 30 mph or so.

Mike noticed my slowing and veering, looked up, and saw the deer. The deer bolted across the road into the passenger side of the car. Mike raised his arms to cover his face. The deer took out the side mirror and shattered the front side window with its head!

Glass flew through the car to every corner of the vehicle. The noise woke Joy who was sleeping across the back seat. I looked at my passengers to make sure they were alright, then started laughing. It was hard to believe… I had just been hit by a deer!

We stopped and got out to look at the damage. The deer was nowhere to be found, it was a hit and run. We used the winter brush to sweep the glass off our seats, I removed what remained of the window, and found some plastic resembling my side mirror on the road behind us. We continued on for the last cold bit of our journey. Mike said, “I guess we’ll have to be more careful how we pray, “Oh deer god, please send us a breakthrough!” Indeed, we should be cautious what we ask God for. We were glad to be in a warm house about 45 minutes later.

This is what the Apostle Paul called “perils in the wilderness” (2 Cor. 11:26) I’ve tagged this post as “Perils of Travel” accordingly. Please continue to pray for us (and our vehicles) as we continue to travel out to minister the Kingdom of God to western MN and the Dakotas.
